Brothels Near Reno: The Closest Legal Brothels to Reno, Nevada

There are no legal brothels in Reno itself. Reno is located in Washoe County, where prostitution is prohibited. But unlike Las Vegas, where the nearest legal brothels require a drive into neighboring Nye County, several of Nevada’s best-known brothels are relatively close to Reno.

There are five brothel properties that reasonably belong in a discussion of brothels near Reno: Mustang Ranch in Storey County, and BunnyRanch, Sagebrush Ranch, Love Ranch and Kit Kat Ranch in Mound House in Lyon County. Kit Kat is currently temporarily closed.

Geographically, these properties are easier to understand as two destinations rather than five. Mustang Ranch is east of Reno and is the closest legal brothel to the city. The other four are clustered together in Mound House, just east of Carson City.

What Is the Closest Brothel to Reno?

Mustang Ranch is the closest licensed brothel to Reno.

Located at 1011 Wild Horse Canyon Drive in Storey County, Mustang Ranch is roughly 20 miles east of Reno and considerably closer to the city than the Mound House brothels. It is especially convenient for travelers arriving by air. Mustang Ranch describes itself as approximately 15 minutes from Reno-Tahoe International Airport and offers car service for visitors who need transportation.

Its location can be confusing to people unfamiliar with Northern Nevada. Mustang Ranch is closely associated with Reno, but it isn’t actually in Reno or Washoe County. The property sits in neighboring Storey County, where licensed brothels are permitted.

For someone searching specifically for the closest brothel to Reno, Mustang Ranch is the clear answer.

The Mound House Brothel Cluster

If you’ve never been to Mound House, the geography is a little unusual. Four legal brothels are packed into a remarkably small area along U.S. Highway 50.

BunnyRanch sits on one side of the highway. Across Highway 50, Kit Kat Drive leads to Sagebrush Ranch, Love Ranch and Kit Kat Ranch, which are clustered together around essentially the same small cul-de-sac. The three properties are close enough to share what historical Nevada brothel driving guides have described as a common parking area.

Once you reach Mound House, you’ve reached a small concentration of brothel properties within a very compact area.

There is also considerably less independent ownership than the five different names suggest. Mustang Ranch is separately owned and operated in Storey County, while the four Mound House properties are under common ownership. That relationship largely dates to the Dennis Hof era and continued after his death in 2018.

Getting There From Reno

A rental car isn’t necessarily required to visit one of the brothels near Reno.

Car service has long been part of the Northern Nevada brothel business. Mustang Ranch says visitors without transportation can arrange car service directly through the ranch.

The Mound House properties also provide transportation in the Reno, Carson City and Lake Tahoe area. BunnyRanch, for example, currently advertises transportation from Reno-Tahoe International Airport and directs visitors to contact the ranch about transportation.

Transportation policies can change, so it’s worth contacting the individual brothel before arriving to confirm pickup arrangements.

For travelers who prefer to drive, Mustang Ranch is the shorter trip from Reno. Mound House requires continuing south toward Carson City and then east along U.S. Highway 50.

Northern Nevada Isn’t Southern Nevada

People who haven’t spent much time in the state sometimes picture all of Nevada as one big brown desert. Around Reno and Lake Tahoe, that’s definitely not the case.

Any time of year can be a good time to visit a Reno-area brothel, but the experience of getting there can change considerably with the seasons.

A January trip to Mustang Ranch or Mound House is different from a January trip to one of the brothels in Nye County outside Las Vegas. Winters around Las Vegas and Pahrump are generally mild. Northern Nevada can see much colder temperatures, snow and occasional winter driving conditions.

The mountains surrounding the Reno-Tahoe region make this especially important for visitors coming from Lake Tahoe or traveling during a winter storm. Spring and summer present an entirely different version of Northern Nevada, with warmer temperatures and generally easier driving conditions.

The Rules Aren’t the Same Everywhere in Nevada

Another common misconception about Nevada brothels is that they all operate under one statewide set of rules.

Nevada’s system gives counties considerable authority over how licensed brothels operate. As a result, moving from Nye County in Southern Nevada to Lyon or Storey County in Northern Nevada can mean encountering different local regulations.

Lyon County, where the Mound House brothels operate, allows sex-worker work cards beginning at age 18. Patrons can also enter a licensed Lyon County brothel at 18, although Nevada’s usual 21-year-old minimum still applies to alcohol.

This differs from the brothels in Nye County outside Las Vegas, where the minimum age is 21.

Storey County has its own brothel regulations governing Mustang Ranch.

These differences are worth understanding because phrases such as “Nevada brothel laws” can give the impression that a rule at one legal brothel automatically applies everywhere else in the state. Often, it doesn’t.

One of the more interesting examples involves something that has been part of Northern Nevada brothel culture for decades: the outdate.

What Is an Outdate?

An outdate generally refers to an arrangement in which a courtesan leaves the brothel with a client after arrangements have been made through the brothel.

Outdates aren’t a new or particularly secret part of Northern Nevada brothel history. They have been discussed publicly for decades by customers, courtesans and brothels themselves, and references to them can be found throughout long-running Nevada brothel forums and other industry sources.

The legal language surrounding them is more complicated.

Storey County’s brothel regulations specifically recognize escort services associated with licensed brothels and use the term “outdating.” The county requires a separate escort license and places restrictions on what can occur away from the licensed brothel.

Mustang Ranch itself openly discusses off-property dates. Its visitor information says courtesans may be available for dates away from the ranch when the date begins at Mustang and the appropriate arrangements have been made.

Lyon County’s written regulations are different, and the two counties shouldn’t be treated as though their laws are interchangeable.

What is clear is that outdating has long existed as an established concept within the Northern Nevada brothel industry. The industry’s practical use of the term and the precise language of county ordinances don’t always line up neatly.

That’s also a notable difference from Nye County, where prostitution is restricted to licensed brothel premises and outcalls aren’t permitted.

Anyone interested in an outdate should discuss the current rules and arrangements directly with the brothel involved rather than assuming that what is available at one Nevada property will necessarily be available at another.

Why Is Kit Kat Ranch Listed If It’s Closed?

Kit Kat Ranch remains an important part of the Mound House brothel cluster, even though it isn’t currently operating.

A major fire struck the property in September 2023 and caused extensive damage to the building. Everyone inside was able to evacuate, and no injuries were reported.

Kit Kat’s own website currently describes the ranch as temporarily closed and directs visitors to BunnyRanch, Sagebrush Ranch and Love Ranch.

The distinction is significant because Kit Kat continues to appear in search results, maps and older Nevada brothel directories. Someone researching brothels near Reno can easily come away with the impression that all four Mound House properties are currently open. As of this page’s latest review, they aren’t.

While there are no legal brothels within Reno, the city is unusually close to several of Nevada’s licensed brothels. Mustang Ranch is the closest, while a longer drive toward Carson City brings visitors to the four brothel properties in Mound House. For travelers who understand the county boundaries, the distances and some of the differences in local rules, the Reno-area brothels are relatively easy to navigate.
