Elko County has four incorporated cities: Elko, Wells, Carlin and West Wendover. Based on the information Brothel Nevada was able to verify in August 2026, six brothels are operating in the county: four in the City of Elko and two in Wells. Carlin, which had operating brothels in recent years, currently has none, while West Wendover prohibits prostitution. Those six houses account for more than one-third of the 16 brothels Brothel Nevada identified as operating across Nevada in our 2026 review.
Elko County Brothels at a Glance
The six brothels are divided between two groups approximately 50 miles apart:
- Mona’s Ranch: 103 South Third Street, Elko
- Inez’s D&D: 232 South Third Street, Elko
- Sue’s Fantasy Club: 175 South Third Street, Elko
- Desert Rose: 357 Douglas Street, Elko
- Bella’s Hacienda: 623 Eighth Street, Wells
- Donna’s Ranch: 679 Eighth Street, Wells
Where Are the Brothels in Elko County?
Elko’s four brothels form an unusually compact district close to downtown. Mona’s Ranch, Sue’s Fantasy Club and Inez’s D&D are all on South Third Street, while Desert Rose is around the corner on Douglas Street. Elko zoning restricts brothels to a small Restricted Commercial district, and the city code identifies the specific lots where the use is permitted.
Wells is approximately 50 miles east of Elko along Interstate 80. Bella’s Hacienda and Donna’s Ranch are both on Eighth Street, across the railroad tracks from the historic center of town. The arrangement is longstanding. A 2001 report by The New York Times described the same two Wells brothels in essentially the same location.
The Four Brothels in Elko
Mona’s Ranch
Mona’s Ranch is at 103 South Third Street, near the northern end of Elko’s small brothel district. Its website advertises massage, dancing and other entertainment, and says walk-ins are welcome. Customers looking for a particular sex worker are encouraged to make an appointment.
Mona’s is also a longstanding Elko brothel name, although the history of the name and property is more complicated than it first appears.
Inez’s D&D
Inez’s D&D is located at 232 South Third Street. Its website describes the traditional Elko brothel process: customers can walk in, request a lineup and meet a sex worker before discussing services and prices privately. Like Mona’s, Inez’s recommends contacting the house in advance when a visitor wants to see a specific sex worker.
Sue’s Fantasy Club
Sue’s Fantasy Club operates at 175 South Third Street, between Mona’s and Inez’s. The Sue’s name has been part of Elko’s brothel landscape for decades and appears on period Nevada brothel maps, which we examine in our Nevada Brothel Genealogy.
Desert Rose
Desert Rose is at 357 Douglas Street, just around the corner from the three South Third Street brothels. It operates as both a gentlemen’s club and legal brothel, with a lounge, adult entertainment and private negotiations between customers and sex workers. Its website lists the Douglas Street address and identifies the business as a legal brothel.
The property has one of the more complicated brothel genealogies in Elko. Over the years, 357 Douglas has been associated with Club Mona Lisa, CharDon’s, Mona Lisa again and No. 1 Geisha before becoming Desert Rose. The Two Brothels in Wells
Bella’s Hacienda
Bella’s Hacienda operates at 623 Eighth Street in Wells. It is part of an older Hacienda brothel line documented in the city for decades. A 1975 Nevada brothel map identifies the Hacienda Club, while a mid-1980s map identifies Patcia’s Hacienda. The surviving evidence supports the broader Hacienda lineage without establishing every ownership and property transition with equal certainty.
Donna’s Ranch
Donna’s Ranch is nearby at 679 Eighth Street. Based on the information available during our August 2026 review, Brothel Nevada identifies it as operating.
Donna’s promotes a history stretching back to the nineteenth century. The precise age of the business, however, is harder to establish than its promotional history suggests.
Elko City and Wells Have Different Brothel Laws
Although Elko and Wells are both in Elko County, the two incorporated cities regulate their brothels independently. Elko’s code permits a maximum of four brothels, while Wells permits a maximum of two. Those limits match the current operating landscape. Both cities restrict brothels to Restricted Commercial zoning under their respective Elko and Wells zoning codes, but their regulations differ in other ways.
Both cities require prostitution to take place inside a licensed brothel. Elko’s code states explicitly that there will be no “out dates”. Wells similarly prohibits hiring a sex worker to accompany a customer outside the brothel for the purpose of prostitution. Wells separately regulates escort agencies, defining escort activity as “outdating” or “out calling” while prohibiting prostitution during that escort activity. Those escort provisions should not be read as permitting prostitution outside the brothel.
What About Carlin?
Carlin is the third Elko County city with a documented modern brothel history. Sharon’s Bar and Brothel and the Dovetail Ranch both operated along State Route 278. A Library of Congress photograph taken in January 2022 identified Sharon’s as a bar and bordello. Sharon’s has since been reported closed, and Brothel Nevada found no evidence that it has reopened.
Dovetail remained licensed until 2024. On August 14, 2024, the Carlin City Council revoked its brothel license. Official council minutes from August 28 record the earlier revocation while addressing Dovetail’s liquor license. Brothel Nevada has not identified another operating brothel in Carlin since Dovetail closed.
Why Aren’t There Brothels in West Wendover?
West Wendover is also in Elko County, but its municipal code expressly prohibits prostitution and businesses operated for the purpose of prostitution within city limits. The prohibition dates to a 1991 ordinance and remains in the current code.
This is one reason describing prostitution as simply “legal in Elko County” can be misleading. Nevada’s brothel system depends on local regulation, and incorporated cities can adopt their own rules. Someone crossing the Utah border into West Wendover is entering the same county that contains six legal brothels, but none of those brothels can legally operate in West Wendover itself.
A Brief History of Brothels in Elko County
Elko County’s brothel history reaches back well over a century. Elko was established as a railroad town in 1868, and Buildings of Nevada notes that hotels, bars and brothels developed south of the railroad tracks as businesses followed the traffic created by the railroad. Researcher Jerry Schimmel has used census records, newspapers and surviving trade tokens to document several Elko madams by the early twentieth century. His collection includes tokens associated with ten Elko houses between 1900 and 1940.
Today, Elko’s four operating brothels are clustered around South Third and Douglas streets near downtown. Individual businesses, names and properties have changed repeatedly over the years, making the genealogy of the current houses considerably more complicated than a simple list of old brothel names might suggest.
Wells developed differently. The Central Pacific Railroad established the town as a water station in 1869, and the two brothel lines that survive today are located across the tracks from the historic center. Donna’s Ranch promotes an origin story dating to 1867, although Brothel Nevada has not found online archival evidence sufficient to verify continuous operation from that year. The surviving documentation is stronger for the later histories of both Donna’s and the Hacienda line.
Carlin later developed its own smaller brothel presence, represented most recently by Sharon’s and Dovetail. Sharon’s has been reported closed, while Dovetail lost its brothel license in 2024.
Visiting the Brothels of Elko County
Elko’s four brothels are clustered around South Third and Douglas streets near downtown, while the two Wells houses are approximately 50 miles east. Visitors looking for a particular sex worker should contact the house before traveling, since operating hours and lineups can change. Both Elko and Wells require brothel patrons to be at least 21.
