In February 2015, British journalist Nichi Hodgson wrote about visiting Sheri’s Ranch, a licensed brothel outside Las Vegas, to try Nuru massage. The establishment had recently opened a specialty room with Japanese-inspired decor, subdued lighting and a waterproof bed designed for the slippery, body-to-body experience. Hodgson booked a session with a courtesan named Juna. Having previously worked as a professional dominatrix, Hodgson was familiar with providing intimate services, but experiencing them as a paying customer gave her an entirely different perspective. At one point, she asked Juna how she’d learned to perform Nuru massage. The courtesan’s answer was surprisingly straightforward: “YouTube!”
Today, Nuru is one of several types of erotic massage advertised by Nevada’s licensed brothels. Customers researching these establishments will encounter references to tantric massage, sensual massage, nude massage, body-to-body massage and other variations, sometimes with little explanation of what the experience actually involves. Some services are primarily sensual, while others may include sexual activities negotiated between the customer and courtesan. The terminology isn’t always consistent from one brothel to another, and individual courtesans have considerable discretion over the experiences they offer. Nevada’s unusual prostitution laws also create important distinctions between erotic massage performed inside licensed brothels and massage services offered elsewhere. The history of these experiences, particularly Nuru massage, is more extensive than the relatively recent development of specialized massage rooms might suggest.
What Is Erotic Massage, and How Does It Differ From Therapeutic Massage?
Massage covers a wide range of experiences, whether someone visits a traditional spa or a licensed Nevada brothel. Swedish massage, deep-tissue treatments, hot-stone massage and other familiar techniques can be used for relaxation, muscle tension and general well-being. Erotic massage may incorporate many of these same techniques, with an additional emphasis on sensual pleasure and, depending on the arrangement, sexual gratification. The services can overlap considerably in their methods, although the purpose of the encounter and the activities involved may be quite different.
Nevada regulates professional massage therapy through the State Board of Massage Therapy. Under NRS 640C.580, individuals seeking a state massage therapy license generally must complete a recognized educational program, pass an approved competency examination and undergo a background investigation that includes fingerprinting. Under NAC 640C.052, certain programs recognized by the Board must provide at least 625 hours of instruction, although alternative educational and licensing pathways exist. Massage establishments are also generally required to obtain a certificate of operation from the Board.
Nevada law makes a specific exception for licensed brothels. Under NRS 640C.100(1)(h), the state’s massage therapy licensing chapter does not apply to someone performing activities inside a licensed brothel. Consequently, a courtesan can provide massage services without obtaining a separate state massage therapy license. She must still comply with the licensing and health requirements applicable to brothel workers, including local requirements such as those established under Nye County Code Chapter 9.20. The exemption itself tells us nothing about an individual courtesan’s training, professional credentials or experience performing massage.
Some Nevada brothels advertise massage experiences that sound remarkably similar to those offered at conventional spas. The Desert Club in Battle Mountain, for example, lists deep-tissue and hot-stone massage alongside sensual, mutual, Nuru and happy-ending massage. These offerings encompass a considerable range of experiences, and customers shouldn’t assume that every massage at a brothel includes sexual contact. Someone might arrange a relaxing massage without intercourse, while another customer may prefer an extended encounter that combines massage with other forms of intimacy.

Nuru, Tantric, Body-to-Body and Other Types of Erotic Massage
Nuru is one of the more distinctive erotic massage experiences advertised by Nevada’s licensed brothels. It involves a slippery gel applied to the bodies of both participants, allowing the courtesan to glide across the customer’s skin using considerably more than her hands. The experience generally involves nudity and is often performed on a waterproof surface, sometimes with showering before or afterward. The term is associated with the Japanese expression nurunuru, which describes something slippery or slimy. Nuru massage is widely associated with Japan’s adult bathhouse industry, where earlier forms of body-gliding massage were practiced using soap foam. However, the precise origins of the modern gel-based technique are less certain than commercial descriptions sometimes suggest.
The gel is a defining characteristic of Nuru massage, although the products used for these experiences aren’t necessarily identical. The ingredients vary by product; for example, one commercially available Nuru gel lists seaweed extracts and aloe vera. At Sheri’s Ranch, customers can arrange a Nuru experience in a dedicated specialty room equipped with a waterproof massage bed and shower facilities. The brothel advertises the massage as an experience that can be enjoyed with additional sexual activities, depending on what the courtesan and customer agree upon.
Body-to-body massage is a broader description that can include Nuru along with other techniques involving extensive physical contact between the provider and recipient. These encounters may use massage oils, lotions or other lubricants, and they don’t necessarily require the specialized equipment associated with Nuru. Some brothels advertise breast massage, in which a courtesan uses her breasts to massage the customer’s body. Nude massage is another option, although the name itself doesn’t explain which techniques or sexual activities are included. The Mustang Ranch pleasure menu, for example, advertises both nude and breast massage, including an option for two courtesans to participate in a massage.
Tantric massage is generally presented somewhat differently. In contemporary erotic massage advertising, the term is often associated with slower, more deliberate touching, sensual awareness and an emphasis on physical intimacy. The BunnyRanch sex menu describes tantric massage as a more meditative experience involving subtle touching and sexual energy. The terminology has a complicated history, however. Tantra encompasses centuries-old Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions, while many contemporary practices emphasizing sexuality developed through Western Neo-Tantra during the twentieth century. Religious studies scholar Hugh B. Urban examines this development in The Oxford Handbook of Tantric Studies. A massage advertised as tantric at a Nevada brothel shouldn’t automatically be understood as a traditional religious practice, and individual courtesans may approach the experience differently.
Other descriptions are considerably more straightforward. Sensual massage and erotic massage are broad terms that leave room for different techniques and levels of intimacy. The familiar expression “happy-ending massage” generally describes a massage that concludes with sexual climax, often involving the hands or mouth. Mutual massage suggests an arrangement in which both participants take part in providing physical pleasure, while four-hand massage involves two providers working with one customer. The Desert Club in Battle Mountain advertises several of these options, including mutual, sensual and happy-ending massage.
These descriptions can help customers identify the kinds of experiences that interest them, but there is no standardized statewide menu defining exactly what each massage includes. Two courtesans advertising Nuru or tantric massage may use different techniques, equipment and approaches.
What Nevada Brothels Actually Advertise
Erotic massage appears on the websites of licensed brothels throughout Nevada, although establishments differ considerably in how they present these services. Some provide detailed descriptions of massage experiences, while others include them among their general offerings or identify individual courtesans who advertise particular specialties. At Mona’s Ranch in Elko, for example, the service menu lists both massage and Nuru without explaining the techniques involved. Donna’s Ranch in Wells advertises Nuru and tantric massage among the specialties of an individual courtesan, while the Mustang Ranch near Reno includes nude and breast massage under a section of its pleasure menu devoted to foreplay.
The BunnyRanch and Sagebrush Ranch, both located in Lyon County, take a more descriptive approach. Their published menus use nearly identical language to promote Nuru massage, tantric massage and other erotic services, including descriptions of the sensations customers might experience. The similarities illustrate how brothels can use common promotional language to advertise services that individual courtesans may approach quite differently. These menus also provide links to courtesans associated with particular activities, allowing customers to explore their interests beyond the general descriptions.
Public website copy establishes that erotic massage is a recognized service category across Nevada’s licensed brothel industry, including smaller establishments outside the state’s better-known brothel destinations. However, the presence of a particular service on a website doesn’t establish how frequently customers request it or guarantee that every courtesan offers it. The Mona’s Ranch and Inez’s D&D FAQ explains that courtesans are independent contractors who determine their own prices and the activities they’re willing to provide. It also identifies a body rub as one possible form of a negotiated encounter. Customers interested in massage can therefore use these published offerings to identify possibilities before discussing the details with an individual courtesan. Inside the Experience: What Customers and Courtesans Describe
Hodgson’s VICE account describes her unexpected self-consciousness as a paying customer, particularly when deciding how much physical contact she should initiate with Juna. Although she had agreed to ask permission before touching the courtesan, Hodgson caught herself testing those boundaries through physical gestures, something she recognized from her own experiences with clients. She described the massage as intensely sensual and was impressed by Juna’s attentiveness and professionalism, although she was careful to distinguish the pleasure of the experience from the personal intimacy of a romantic relationship.
A different perspective appeared in a February 2026 Esquire essay by Paloma Karr, who described her experiences working as a courtesan at Sheri’s Ranch. On New Year’s Eve, Karr was invited to join a coworker named Hana and a customer identified as Joel, who had spent several hours with Hana at one of the ranch’s VIP bungalows. According to Karr, Joel had struggled with loneliness and had relatively little experience with women. The two courtesans initially spent time cuddling with him and listening to his experiences before Hana offered to demonstrate Nuru massage while Karr watched. Hana, who Karr identified as Japanese, reportedly had received training in Nuru in Japan. She prepared the bungalow bed with a waterproof sheet, mixed the massage gel with warm water and began by gently massaging Joel before using the gel for the body-to-body portion of the experience.
Karr was particularly interested in learning Nuru because she had been disappointed by the informal methods she believed some of her coworkers used when offering the service. Watching Hana gave her an opportunity to observe a technique she had wanted to understand more thoroughly. What surprised her most, however, was the emotional character of the encounter. She described Hana’s movements as graceful and deliberate, and interpreted the experience as an expression of affection toward a customer who had gone many years without meaningful physical intimacy. Karr herself did not perform the massage or have intercourse with Joel. Nevertheless, she wrote that witnessing the encounter affected her deeply, describing what she saw as almost sacred.
These accounts also illustrate how differently courtesans may learn and perform specialized massage techniques. In Hodgson’s account, Juna said she had learned Nuru by watching videos on YouTube. Eleven years later, Karr described a coworker who said she had trained in Japan. Neither account establishes a standard method of instruction, and the differences shouldn’t be interpreted as evidence that one courtesan’s experience was necessarily superior to another’s. They do suggest that individual approaches to Nuru can develop through different combinations of instruction, observation and personal experience.
Other courtesans discuss massage as part of the flexibility available to customers at licensed brothels. In her 2025 first-timer’s guide to Nevada brothels, veteran courtesan Alice Little explains that customers may arrange experiences ranging from intercourse to sensual massage, cuddling or extended conversation. Her discussion reflects a broader aspect of legal brothel encounters: the activities and amount of physical intimacy are negotiated according to the interests and boundaries of the people involved. For someone primarily interested in massage, that flexibility can be as appealing as the prospect of sexual activity.

How Nuru Became Part of Nevada Brothel Culture
Determining exactly when erotic massage became part of Nevada’s licensed brothel industry is difficult. Courtesans have considerable freedom to develop their own specialties, and the services they provide aren’t necessarily documented in advertisements or other public records. Massage was certainly being promoted long before the appearance of dedicated Nuru facilities. In February 2013, Sheri’s Ranch published an article about happy-ending massage, describing erotic massage as an experience customers could arrange at the brothel. By that time, Nuru was also being offered elsewhere in Nevada.
On April 12, 2013, a customer using the name Norcal posted about a visit to Alien Cathouse in Lathrop Wells, where he had received a Nuru massage from a courtesan named Lady Aries. Although he declined to provide a detailed description of the encounter, he wrote that the Nuru experience was everything he had been led to expect and more. Lady Aries was an active participant in the same online discussion, lending additional context to the customer’s account. The report provides contemporaneous evidence that Nuru was being practiced at a licensed Nevada brothel by April 2013, although the technique may have been available at other establishments even earlier.
A more visible development occurred in October 2014, when Sheri’s Ranch opened a specialty room designed specifically for Nuru massage. The establishment has described the facility as the first of its kind within Nevada’s licensed brothel industry, although that statewide distinction hasn’t been independently established. The room featured a waterproof bed designed for body-gliding, shower facilities and an environment suited to the extensive use of massage gel. In an October 20, 2014 announcement, Sheri’s began promoting Nuru as a distinct experience available to customers visiting the property.
The specialty room also attracted attention beyond the brothel’s own advertising. In February 2015, VICE published Nichi Hodgson’s firsthand account of receiving a massage in the new facility. Four months later, The Guardian’s Dan Hernandez described the room during a broader examination of how Nevada brothels were developing specialized experiences to attract customers. The coverage demonstrated how a service that individual courtesans could provide in ordinary rooms had become the basis for a purpose-built facility and a recognizable attraction.
The surviving accounts leave considerable room for earlier history. We don’t know which Nevada courtesan first offered Nuru massage, how widely it was practiced before 2013, or whether Sheri’s courtesans were already providing it before the specialty room opened. What the documented history does show is that by the middle of the 2010s, Nuru had acquired a more prominent place in the marketing of Nevada’s licensed brothels, supported by specialized facilities, detailed advertising and national media coverage.
Why Erotic Massage Is Legally Different Inside a Nevada Brothel
Nevada’s prostitution laws establish an important distinction between erotic massage offered at licensed brothels and similar services offered elsewhere. Under NRS 201.295, prostitution includes compensated sexual intercourse, oral-genital contact and certain touching of sexual organs or other intimate parts for sexual gratification. An erotic massage can therefore qualify as prostitution even when intercourse isn’t involved. Nevada generally prohibits prostitution outside licensed brothels, including in Las Vegas, where customers and providers can face criminal penalties for participating in unlawful sexual services.
Illegal prostitution disguised as massage remains an enforcement concern in Las Vegas. In October 2025, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police announced four arrests following a two-year investigation into alleged illegal prostitution and money laundering involving businesses operating as massage parlors. The individuals arrested were associated with the businesses under investigation, and the allegations had not been established as criminal convictions at the time of the announcement. The case illustrates how businesses offering sexual services under the guise of massage can become the subject of criminal investigations.
Licensed brothels operate under a separate regulatory framework that includes county licensing, sanitation and health requirements. Nye County Code Chapter 9.20, for example, requires courtesans to obtain work cards, undergo regular health examinations and comply with sanitation requirements covering equipment, linens and bathing facilities. State regulations also require regular sexually transmitted infection testing. Under NAC 441A.805, latex or polyurethane protective barriers are required for intercourse, oral-genital contact and touching of sexual organs or other intimate parts, including when those activities occur during an erotic massage.
Can You Book an Erotic Massage Without Intercourse?
Yes. Customers can arrange massage experiences at Nevada’s licensed brothels without necessarily purchasing intercourse or other sexual activities. The Desert Rose in Elko, for example, explains in its FAQ that a private encounter, commonly called a “party,” can involve sex, a body rub or other activities agreed upon by the customer and courtesan. Someone interested primarily in massage can discuss that preference during the usual negotiation process, although there’s no guarantee that every courtesan will offer the particular experience being requested.
It’s also worth clarifying what a customer means by a massage without intercourse. Some may want a relaxing, hands-on massage with little or no sexual contact, while others may be interested in a nude, sensual or Nuru experience that includes sexual stimulation but stops short of intercourse. These arrangements aren’t necessarily interchangeable, and the distinction is worth discussing before agreeing on a price. The Sheri’s Ranch Nuru description, for example, includes a shared shower and body-to-body massage, with the possibility of incorporating additional sexual activities. Customers shouldn’t assume that everything described in a promotional presentation is automatically included in an individual encounter.
Practical considerations can also influence the experience. Someone interested in Nuru may want to know whether a dedicated massage room is available, what kind of gel will be used, whether showering is part of the session and how much time is devoted to the actual massage. Customers with allergies, sensitive skin or particular physical limitations should mention those concerns in advance. Price is another consideration, since there is no standardized statewide rate for erotic massage, and an encounter without intercourse isn’t necessarily less expensive than one involving other sexual activities. The amount depends on the courtesan, the time involved and the services being negotiated. A customer who explains what kind of massage they’re interested in, including any activities they would prefer to avoid, gives the courtesan a reasonable opportunity to explain what she offers and establish a price.
Beyond the Massage Menu
The firsthand accounts of erotic massage at Nevada brothels reveal how differently these encounters can unfold, even when customers request the same technique. Some describe experiences focused on sexual pleasure, while others emphasize relaxation, physical affection or the simple enjoyment of being touched. The specialized equipment and facilities available at certain brothels can enhance these experiences, but much depends on the individual courtesan and her approach to massage.
